1/14/2024 0 Comments Scala sancta![]() Today, the Scala Sancta leads to the Sancta Sanctorum, the first private papal chapel which is known as the Holiest of Holies due to the numerous relics secreted there none of which have been seen since the early 16th century. By the time the long Babylonian Captivity was over and the papacy returned to Rome in 1377, the Lateran had suffered extensive damage in two major fires and the popes looked elsewhere for digs, eventually winding up in the Vatican. The Lateran Palace was the primary residence of the popes until the 14th century when the papal court was moved to Avignon. They were protected with a dedicated roof and regular steps were built on either side for non-ceremonial use. They were installed in the Lateran Palace, the ancient domus of the Plautii Laterani family on the Caelian Hill which was given to the Pope by Constantine around 313 A.D., leading up to a hall near the Chapel of St. Helen was sold many, many “relics” on her tour of the Holy Land.) In the chapel there are 28 Gothic tabernacles with relics inside them placed along the walls. In the Chapel there are mosaics frescoes and commissioned by Pope Nicolas III. These holy relics gave the chapel its name- "Holiest of Holies." This chapel dates back as far as the 8th century and it was rebuilt in 1278. Inside the are some well preserved relics which were brought from the old Lateran Palace. The Sancta Sanctorum, which is located on the first floor of the palace, used to be the private chapel of the early Popes in the Lateran palace. The steps lead up to the Sancta Sanctorum. They are adjacent to a church which was built on earth brought from Mount Calvary. Originally, the Scala Sancta was comprised from twenty-eight steps crafted in white marble. The Scala Santa has attracted in the past and continues to attract millions of Christian pilgrims from all corners of the world. According to this tradition in the 4th century the stairs were taken to Rome by St. Jesus Christ stood on the Scala Santa at the time of his Passion on the way his trial. Traditionally, the Scala Sancta is the actual stair case that led to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem. The Lateran Palace used to be the residence of the Popes before the Avignon Exile and is now used as the Museo Storico Vaticano which is a museum of the history of the Papal States. The Lateran Palace is located in proximity to the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, the cathedral church of Rome. The Scala Sancta (Holy Stairs) are steps that can be found in what used to be the old Lateran Palace.
